Boyne City newcomer wins in a landslide

New city commissioner aligns with 3rd term commissioner

BOYNE CITY - Not many people seemed to be familiar with Mike Cummings, but 297 voters approved of him over incumbent Jerry Douglas who received 94 votes in the Nov. 6 election for city commission.

Cummings, of 635 North St., ran on his outspoken support of the views and decisions of city commissioner Chuck Vondra, on what he, Cummings, said was a need for the commission to listen to the citizens, and on his belief that the waterfront is for the community instead of special interests.

Chuck Vondra was re-elected to his third term on the city commission with 373 votes. Some of Vondra's decisions that were key to his re-election are his conviction that development adhere to the city's zoning ordinance, his opposition to the downtown parking boundary zone, saying it will hurt downtown businesses, his concentration on bringing businesses into the industrial parks, and his desire to create more recreation for residents and visitors.

Vondra and Cummings were sworn in on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at the regular commission meeting. The terms are for four years.
