Ramblers smoke Rams, prepare to host Calumet

The journey continues for the Boyne City Ramblers. A week after a disappointing loss to Grayling, the Ramblers rebounded by blowing out the hapless Harbor Springs Rams 41-0.

"It's a nice way to end the (regular) season," Ramblers head coach David Hills said. "Our goal was to just get better from the previous two weeks and I'm happy with how the kids responded."

Unlike in previous weeks, on Friday the Ramblers struck first. Trevor Kruzel scored on a 5-yard run to cap a 5-play, 41-yard drive with 10:39 to go. Boyne converted the PAT to take a 7-0 lead.

The Rams reached into their bag of tricks on their ensuing possession, trying a fake punt on fourth-and-5 at their own 25 yard line.

Boyne had no trouble stopping the play and took over at Harbor's 22 with 9:30 to go in the first. Seconds later, Robby Jensen broke free for a 20-yard touchdown run, and the rout was on.

Jensen then scored on a punt return to push the lead to 20-0 with only 4:30 elapsed in the game.

Jensen scored yet again on a 30-yard counter with 38 seconds to go in the first to make it 26-0.

And as if enough wasn't going the Rams' way, on the PAT attempt the snap was fumbled, but luckily for Boyne, their place kicker is also their standout fullback. Kruzel scooped up the loose ball and ran it into the right corner of the end zone for the 2-point conversion, making the score 28-0.

And that was just the first quarter.

Boyne scored twice more in the second quarter, once on a dazzling 43-yard run by - guess who - Robby Jensen and again on a 1-yard plunge from Stephen Robinson. It was fitting that Robinson get the TD carry, seeing that on the previous play, on fourth-and-long, he busted loose for a 27-yard gain down to the goal line.

The extra point was blocked following Robinson's TD, which kept the score at 41-0, which is where it would remain until the final horn. Boyne now turns their attention to Calumet (6-3), who they host in the first round of playoff action this weekend.

"Playing fast and physical is going to be our best chance," Hills said. "We've got to get back to being physical and increasing our energy and effort."

Hills saw the win over Harbor Springs as a good sign that might be happening.

"We needed to prove we could play physical football right from the start. I thought we played well right off the bat, but we're going to have to get better."
