Thomas again paces EJ girls cross country team



EAST JORDAN-Meghan Thomas is definitely a cut above the rest for the East Jordan girls cross country team.

But, then, that's not news to anyone.

She was the Red Devils' leading performer last fall, and is on pace for another appearance in the state championships when the weather should be considerably cooler.

Thomas was the first Red Devil to cross the finish line, taking eighth place overall in a time of 22 minutes and 8 seconds. East Jordan had a team total of 242 points for ninth place in the team standings.

Pine River scored 38 points to run away with the team title, followed by Harbor Springs in second place with 67 and Elk Rapids third with 84. Central Lake, with its own star in Kari Johnson, finished just ahead of the Red Devils in eighth place as a team with 227 points. Kalkaska was 10th with 254.

Alicia Oliver trailed behind Thomas for the Red Devils, coming in 42nd overall with a time of 25:40. Brady Brennan finished 46th in a time of 26:19. Elizabeth Hufweber had the 84th place in the race with a time of 34:04, while Ellissa Weerstra was 88th with a time of 36:55 and Tess Weerstra finished 91st in a time of 39:05.

Boyne City was led by Erin Haley's 36th place finish in 25:13, followed by Hilary Urman in 52nd place with a time of 27:49, Melissa Seelye in 68th place with a time of 30:10 and Audrey Burk in 85th place with a time of 34:06.

Liz Jones of Pine River was the overall champion in the girls race, with her time of 19:54.4. Central Lake's Johnson took second in a time of 20:09.6, while Elk Rapids ace Amanda Hammer finished sixth in 21:31.9. For the boys, it was Mac Brennan taking 17th place overall in a time of 19:23, followed by Nick Zell in 41st place with a time of 21:20, Felix Kevekordas in 52nd place with a time of 21:45 and Dan Winter finishing 72nd in a time of 24:19.

Elk Rapids won the boys title with 48 points, followed by Harbor Springs in second place with 58 and Onaway third with 114. Boyne City finished seventh with 191.

Ryan Kasper paced the Ramblers with a 14th place finish in a time of 19:08.

Kevin night finished 27th overall in a time of 20:20, followed by Jesse Place in 51st place with a time of 21:44, Zachary Matthew in 63rd place with a time of 22:38, Taylor Korchase in 69th place with a time of 23:43 and Spencer Caverly in 70th place with a time of 23:53.

Alex Vanise of Pine River took the individual overall title with a time of 16:30.2, while Jim Janese of Elk Rapids was third in 17:40.9 and Thomas Lucas of Elk Rapids finished fourth in 17:53.1.
