Boyne City rambles past Newberry, 21-0

NEWBERRY - Boyne City varsity football coach Dave Hills had several reasons to be smiling after last Friday night's 21-0 non-conference victory over Newberry.

For starters, it was the Ramblers' second consecutive shutout. Any time the defense hangs a goose egg on someone, the coach has to be beaming afteward.

Secondly, the Ramblers are off to a 2-0 start and gathering momentum for what they hope will be a run at the Lake Michigan Conference title and a playoff berth.

And, last by certainly not least, the Ramblers took advantage of two key turnovers by Newberry inside what is commonly called "the red zone." That's the area from the opponent's 20-yard line on in to the end zone. If a team picks up a fumble or intercepts a pass in that area and fails to punch the ball into the end zone ... it calls more for a frown than a grin from the coach.

But the Ramblers didn't disappoint coach Hills, quickly capitalizing on both big turnovers to spoil any chance Newberry had of staying in the game.

After some spotty play in a season-opening 34-0 win over McBain, the Ramblers tightened things up against Newberry and didn't experience much trouble.

Dominating the game defensively, the Ramblers further fine-tuned their offense in preparation for major tests that await them down the line. Ramblers capitalize on turnovers

The Ramblers benefited from two costly mistakes by the Indians. One was a fumbled punt return, as well as another fumble when they were threatening to score.

Newberry's defense managed to hold the Ramblers' running attack to just 142 yards on 29 carries for the night, a total that coach Hills definitely wasn't happy about.

But the Ramblers won the field position battle, and that made the difference.

With the offensive line again providing excellent blocking, the Ramblers managed to make enough headway on the ground to continue its ball control attack.

Robby Jensen was their leading rusher for the game with 92 yards. Trever Kruzel added 68 yards rushing.
