Good causes to get out and golf

I'll never be a golf fanatic.

You won't catch me with the dress shoes that have cleats, plaid shorts or ankle-high socks. And nothing short of placing goalies and defensemen in front of the hole, or making golfers race the carts from hole-tohole, would tempt me to watch golf on television.

Some people respond to me, saying watching NASCAR on television is just as bad. To me, golf on television makes NASCAR look like a four-hour hockey fight.

Getting me on the golf course is a rarity, but there are a few good reasons for everyone to hit the links the next few weeks.

First, it's Take Your Daughter to the Golf Course Week, to help promote female golfing. The event is a promotion by the National Golf Course Owners Association, and is in its seventh year.

While the title says daughter, really, it's just an effort on a nationwide scale, to increase the number of women that are playing golf. Evidently, it's working.

According to the NGCOA, in the same week last year, nearly 75,000 players participated in some form. That was an increase of over 10,000 from 2005.

Some golf courses, including Boyne Mountain, are having special events. Friday, Boyne is hosting a free parent/daughter clinic starting at 9 a.m. It is one of nearly 1,200 golf courses in the country, expected to participate in the promotion.

Another reason to golf, is the Bellaire Lions' golf outing at Centennial Farms Golf Course, Thursday, July 19. The money raised helped the Lions serve the community, in various aspects.

This is the eighth year for the event, which will have $5,000 cash and a trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., up for grabs.

If everyone there, will be golfing just like me, I think the cash, and Myrtle Beach, are safe.
