City commissioner wants open bidding

BOYNE CITY - City commissioners voted to approve two contracts with the engineering firm of C2AE. One contract is for $15,700 for C2AE to develop a sanitary sewer master plan. The other contract is for $3,500 for a street rating and routine maintenance recommendations.

City commissioner Mike Cummings objected to the contracts automatically going to C2AE of Gaylord without bids being sought by the city.

Cummings said he would like local companies to have an opportunity to bid for projects.

City manager Michael Cain said that C2AE prices were checked and found to be "very competitive."

The two contracts approved at the meeting on July 8 were part of a comprehensive project that C2AE is working on for the city, said Michael Wiesner of the department of public works.

Mayor Eleanor Stackus said she was happy with C2AE.

"If we switch back and forth it takes longer and costs more," Stackus said.

But Cummings was not swayed and voted not to award the two contracts to C2AE.

"People in town would like to see open bidding," he said.

City Commissioner Dan Adkison said he would like to see more bidding in the future, but voted for the contracts saying they tied in with the overall project. In other matters, the city commission approved construction to begin on the new Veterans Memorial in Veterans Memorial Park.

Organizer Ron Crozier reported to city commissioners that of the $122,700 total cost of the project, $120,550 has been donated or pledged by businesses and individuals. The remaining $2,150 is still needed. Ê
