BOYNE CITY - The
Boyne Area Senior Center
celebrated Sunday when,
after less than three years,
they set a match to the paidin-
full mortgage on their
building. As more than 100
people turned out for dinner
The Cousins Music
Group" played energetic,
foot-stomping music that
propelled many onto the
dance floor. Following dinner
was a short program
honoring former and current
board members and the
combined efforts of all that
resulted in the day's triumph.
The party heated up when
the mortgage was ignited,
page by page, by those who
had worked so hard to accomplish
their goal.
"I never dreamed that I'd
see this place built," Rose
Reinhardt said, just before
she touched a page of the
mortgage to the flame.
Rose, along with friends
Mary Towne and Phyllis
Tisron, recalled the days in
the early 1980's when they
struggled to keep the senior
center going.
"I made 2 sets of Raggedy
Ann dolls and a quilt and we
raffled them off," Rose recalled.
"After a few more
raffles and some bake sales,
we put $6,000 in the bank
to start a fund for the senior
center."
Center Director Vice
President Nels Northup
gave the opening remarks,
saying that the senior center
was "the best kept secret
in town for years." He traced
the progress made from the
beginning when the fledgling
program moved from
place to place. "Finally, they
found a space at city hall
where lunches and activities
were held for about 30
years," Northup said. "The
dream was to someday
have a home to call their
own."
That day came in December
2005 when the
seniors moved into the
new building on Division
Street. A voter approved
millage raised
754,000, defraying the
980,000 total cost of
the project.
"You should be very,
very proud of what
you've done for the
city," Mayor Eleanor
Stackus said when she
addressed the group.
"It's a pleasure to be
here on this occasion to
celebrate what is really
a great achievement."
Loretta Stansell, a 54-
year resident of Boyne
City, said that she enjoys
playing cards at the senior
center. She moved
to Deer Meadows in
2003 and appreciates
the convenience of the
center being located
next door. She was
happy to see all of the
work come to fruition.
Seated next to Loretta,
Louisa Northup agreed
that it was quite an accomplishment.
"They've been working
hard for this day,"
she said.
