Two of the offenders had previous records and sentences included secure detention. Secure detention places juveniles in a locked, armed guard facility. Following time served in secure detention, the sentences included non-secure detention that often involves intensive treatment for behavior problems. One juvenile with a prior record was placed directly into secure detention from the May 30 sentencing hearing. He is serving 20 days and will then serve 15 additional days in non-secure detention. Subsequently, he will serve under house arrest with treatment. The other juvenile with a prior record was sentenced to 40 days in secure detention and began serving 20 days immediately, with 20 days held in abeyance, He was also sentenced to serve 30 days of non-secure detention that is held in abeyance. Both of the juveniles were also sentenced to 80 hours of community service work. The victims decide the community service to be performed. The victims are relatives or friends of the deceased whose tombstones were damaged, or who had monuments stolen. The third juvenile had no previous record. He was sentenced to 60 days of combined detention with 20 days of secure detention and 40 days of non-secure detention. He will perform 60 hours of community service work. The probate court contacts the victims to determine their desires for restitution. The juveniles were apprehended on March 27, by the Boyne City Police Department and police said they confessed to the crimes. The damage occurred in the early morning hours on Sunday, March 25, at Maple Lawn Cemetery. Approximately 75 tombstones were overturned and damaged, along with smaller ornaments at gravesites. A small statue was found in the home of one of the juveniles. |
