East Jordan grads celebrate the journey



EAST JORDAN - The 2007 graduating class held their commencement ceremony in Boswell Stadium at East Jordan High School on Sunday. Family and friends filled the bleachers as 97 graduates were honored for scholastic achievements.

Principal Tamala Jackson introduced Superintendent R.A. Chip" Hansen, who welcomed all assembled to the 116th East Jordan High School graduation. Principal Jackson announced the honor students, followed by the choir selection, "For Just a Little While," led by faculty member William Sommerfeldt. Following the choir's piece, Mr. Sommerfeldt conducted the band in a rendition of "Novena." Salutatorian Jessica Roberts took the dias and spoke about her high school experience and what lies beyond.

"Happiness is to be found along the way," Jessica said. Enjoy the journey and embrace the possibilities." Jessica is the daughter of Roxann and Rick Roberts of East Jordan and plans to attend Michigan State University, majoring in pediatrics. She graduated with a 3.96 grade point average.

Valedictorian Jill Drenth then addressed the crowd and described what made her high school years memorable. "Stereotypical clique boundaries are blurred here," she said, remembering her first high school impressions. Jill paid tribute to her teachers and classmates for a rewarding school career, adding, "Education continues forever." Jill maintained a 4.0 grade point average and will be attending Saginaw Valley State University as a nursing student. Her parents are Steve and Gail Drenth of East Jordan.

Seven medals of academic excellence were awarded by the parents of the recipients. They were Jenaye Chew, Jill Drenth, Jessica Roberts, Laura Schihl, Ashley Skop, Kristi Werner and Kayla Windish who all graduated Summa Cum Laude with a grade-point average between 3.75 and 4.0.

The program ended with the presentation of diplomas and a declaration of graduation by Superintendent Hansen.
