Ashley Skrocki and Meghan Thomas were both double winners. Scrocki claimed her victories in the 100 hurdles (16.1) and 300 hurdles (51.6). She also finished second in the 200. Despite the win in the 100 hurdles, she felt she could have gone faster. "The start was great, but then I switched to four steps (between hurdles)," she said. "I could feel that slow me up." Still, the time was her best of the year. Thomas claimed her first victory of the night in a thrilling 1600 meter run that came down to the wire. She was trailing for the majority of the race, but out-dueled Kari Johnson from Central Lake in the last 200 meters to take the win in 5:39. "I had to run patient," Thomas said after the race while trying to catch her breath. "And then on the last lap I got her at 200 (meters to go) and just used all I could to pull away." Later in the evening, Thomas won the 800 in 2:34.5 and finished second in the 3200 in 12:59. The boys finished seventh with 27 points. Charlevoix won with 162. Erik Brun finished second in the pole vault with a jump of 10 feet 6 inches. Marshall Page picked up three medals. He finished fourth in the discus (106-1.75), sixth in the shot put (37-7) and eighth in the 100 dash (12.8). Bellaire Athletic Director Deb Larson promised a smoother meet next year. "It was a very cold and long evening," she said, "and we appreciate the volunteers and teams who stuck with us in this transitional year. We are already discussing changes to correct some of the problems with this year's meet and promise a better and more efficient event next season." Ê Girls pick up first win Ê In a tri-meet at Elk Rapids with Kalkaska last Wednesday, the girls finished first with 60.5 points while the boys finished third with 33.5. East Jordan only edged Kalkaska by one point in the girls meet. Ashley Skrocki picked up wins in the 100 hurdles (16.6), 300 hurdles (50.8), and 200 meter dash (28.8). Skrocki anchored the 800 meter relay team (2:01.9) that narrowly finished second to Kalkaska. She was joined by Meagan Germaine, Sarah Kupovits and Kaitlin Keane. Meghan Thomas finished first the high jump (4-6) and she was part of the winning 3200 meter relay team (11:56.9) with Alicia Oliver, Brady Brennan, and Kupovits. Thomas also finished second in the mile (5:55.4) and third in the 200 (29.7). Kupovits was also third in the 100 (14.4). Oliver was fourth in the 1600 (6:18.3) and second in the 800 (2:51.8). ÊÊ Tori Carr finished second in the shot put with a throw of 30 feet 3 inches. "This was our first win of the season," East Jordan head coach Dennis Snarey said. "As usual, we were led by Ashley Skrocki and Meghan Thomas. Tori Carr threw 30 feet for the first time." For the boys, Dustin Hill was the lone winner. He finished first in the 800 with a time of 2:24.9. Jacob Baier and Michael Hines finished second and third in the 100 with times of 12.0 and 12.2, respectively. Eger Rivero finished second in the 1600 with a time of 6:03. Michael Cardwell's 47.5 in the 300 hurdles was good for third place. The Red Devils also picked up second place finishes in the 400 and 800 relays. Marshall Page was second in the shot put (39-7) and third in the discus (112-0). "Although we finished third, we had our highest point total of the season," Snarey said. "We only had seven boys running. I'm very proud of their efforts. Marshall Page's throwing is improving, and he'll be ready for conference and regionals." |
