Volleyball team captures third in tourney; whips Elks



MIDLAND - The Boyne City girls varsity volleyball team fought hard to hold their own against a field filled with teams from Class A, B and C schools at the 30 team Northwood University Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 18.

The Lady Ramblers placed third in pool play before bowing out to Bay City Central during the silver pool bracket round.

"I thought that we played really well against a lot of Class A and B teams. The girls were really nervous, but we hung with them all," said Boyne City coach Casie Parker.

In their pool the Lady Ramblers split with Mt. Morris (19-21, 22-20), defeated Carrollton (21-12, 21-15), split with Bay City Central (8-21, 21-16) and split with Lake Orion (21-17, 16-21).

Boyne City ended with a rematch with Bay City Central losing 23-25, 20-25, 9-15.

On the stat sheet the team was led by Jessica Nichols (25 kills, 20 digs), Lindsay Baic (35 digs, 14 kills, eight aces), Trisha Tomkins (32 digs, 12 kills), Lindsay Clemens (73 assists) and Jessica Knysz (18 kills). Amber Kotalik, Mallory Slate and Heidi Olsen were all 100 percent serving for the day.

Boyne City 3, Elk Rapids 0

The Lady Ramblers captured all three games on Feb. 12, when Boyne City defeated Elk Rapids 25-12, 25-21, 25-17 in a Lake Michigan Conference match at Boyne City.

"Everyone contributed to the win tonight," said Parker. "Ashley Juday had some good digs and Perry Fish served seven straight aces." Contributing to the numbers were: Juday (six digs), Tomkins (ten digs, five aces, four kills), Stacey Spaniak (ten digs, four aces), Kynsz (six kills) and Olsen (12 assists).

Boyne City (21-11-7 overall, 8-2 LMC) will travel to Kalkaska Feb. 22.
