Boyne board reviews positive test scores

BOYNE CITY - Students at Boyne City Public Schools show "positive growth" and "steady progression" in most subjects as shown by MEAP test scores.

The principals reported the results to the Board of Education on Feb. 12. Writing and reading are areas students should improve upon, but educators say the scores overall have improved.

The Michigan Education Association (MEA) has filed an unfair labor practice complaint against the district. The complaint relates to the two grievances previously filed against the district by paraprofessionals, but is a separate action. Supt. Bob Alger said the district and MEA attorneys will discuss the matter, but a date had not been set.

Three candidates, including the two incumbents, are vying for two four-year terms on the board. Seeking the slots are incumbents Marty Moody and Richard Mansfield and challenger Billie Reinhardt. The election is May 8.

Alger received a favorable evaluation from the board. His contract was renewed through June 30, 2009. Alger's salary with a tax-sheltered annuity is $105,000 per year.

The board accepted a donation from the Straits Area Narcotics Enforcement (SANE) team of grow lights, power strips and electrical timers. The high school science and hospitality departments will use the equipment.
