Ramblers earn win over rival Blazers

Robby Jensen sank a free throw with 8.1 seconds on the clock to put the Ramblers ahead by two, before the Blazers took one final shot at the basket. Kalkaska was able to get off a three point attempt with the time running out, but the ball rimmed out and Rambler Chad Bannister hauled down the rebound to secure the win for the home team.

Boyne City (5-5 LMC) led the game 15-4 after one quarter and upped the advantage to 25-20 at the end of the first half.

"We came out very strong and played probably our best first quarter of the season to take a 15-4 lead after one," said Boyne City coach John Hertel. "We had ten of our players involved in the quarter."

Kalkaska (4-6 LMC) gained the lead when the Blazers out pointed the Ramblers 159 in the third quarter.

"Our regrouping on post defense was huge. We worked a lot on that after our loss on Tuesday and we got good pressure on the ball from our guards Josh Konecki and Chad Bannister," said Hertel.

"Cody Mittig and Robby Jensen came up big at the free throw line. Robby hit three big free throws in the final minute," Hertel added.

Taylor Voice led the Boyne City scoring with 24 points, while Mittig (nine points, five of six free throws), Jensen (seven points, seven of eight free throws) and Jeff Moore (seven points) all chipped in to add to the Rambler attack.

Voice added seven rebounds and five steals and Moore contributed with five rebounds.

Stan Demo (18 points) and Chris Keller (14 points) led the Kalkaska scoring.

Kingsley 61, Boyne City 56

Kingsley led on the scoreboard at the end of all four quarters when the Stags defeated the Ramblers 61-56 on Tuesday, Feb. 6.

Kingsley forged leads of 14-12. 32-29 and 45-37 at the quarter breaks and then held off a 19-16 push by Boyne City to gain the non conference win in Kingsley.

"This was good non league competition for us and we battled them, but couldnŐt come out with the win," said Hertel. "The big guys, especially Worm, gave us some problems. This is something we need to go back and work harder on - our post defense."

Brian Bott and Dan Worm led the Kingsley scoring with 21 points each. Voice led the Rambler win with 27 points and seven steals. Moore chipped in with 16 points and six boards.

Boyne City (6-8 overall) will travel to Charlevoix on Friday, Feb. 16, and host Traverse City St. Francis on Tuesday, Feb. 20.
