Rams use fast start to defeat Ramblers

HARBOR SPRINGS - Harbor Springs took a 24-9 lead in the first eight minutes and withstood a second and third quarter push from the Ramblers to hold on for an 84-76 Lake Michigan Conference win over the Boyne City boys varsity basketball team on Friday, Feb. 2.

Boyne City (4-5 LMC) outscored Harbor Springs (5-4 LMC) 42-28 in the middle two periods, but the Rams out pointed the Ramblers 32-22 in the fourth quarter.

"We had a very disappointing first quarter in which they out played us, and to compound that, our shots in the paint werenÕt dropping," said Boyne City coach John Hertel.

The Ramblers responded to the early deficit by playing great team basketball, said Hertel.

"When we took the lead, I really thought we were going to end up getting this one, but they converted on a few more shots down the stretch and we were forced to foul them and they sealed the deal," he said.

Sean McCarthy (14 points) and Josh Graybiel (13 points) led the Harbor Springs scoring.

The Ramblers countered with a balanced scoring effort paced by Robby Jensen (22 points), Taylor Voice (21 points), Jeff Moore (15 points) and Dan Remsberg (eight points).

Voice also contributed five assists and five steals, while Cody Mittig chipped in with eight rebounds and four assists. Moore added five rebounds and Remsberg had four boards.

"I think our players learned from this game and despite the loss, I think we might have learned some important things about ourselves as a team," said Hertel.

Boyne City 57, Grayling 45

The Ramblers took a 29-19 lead after one half and outscored the Vikings 28-26 in the second to secure a 57-45 conference win in a make up game against Grayling in Boyne City on Monday, Jan. 29.

"We came out and played with a lot of energy in this game and it was good to get back in front of the home crowd," said Hertel.

"I wasn't sure how we were going to come out on a Monday night after a snow out on Friday and after we hadn't played a game in ten days," Hertel Moore led the win with 24 points, including 14 of 15 free throws, and added seven rebounds for the night. Voice chipped in with 22 points and 11 boards to get a double-double.

"Jeff really has worked hard on his shooting and it paid off with 14 of 15 at the foul line, 12 of 13 in the second half," Hertel said.

Boyne City led 15-7, 29-19 and 42-27 at the end of the first three quarters.

Josh Stapleton and Mike Boylan led Grayling with 13 points each. Boyne City (5-7 overall) will host Kalkaska on Friday, Feb. 9, and travel to Gaylord on Tuesday, Feb. 13.
