BOYNE CITY Ñ The Boyne Area Chamber of Commerce held its annual meeting Thursday, Jan. 18, at the Wolverine Dilworth Hotel.
Fortified by a generous line-up of hors dÕoeuvres, the crowdÕs enthusiasm ran high during the program. Wolverine Dilworth Hotel owners Buddy and Susan Christensen created a scrumptious display of oysters on the half shell, crab legs, fruit, veggies and desserts that included bananas foster. Spotted at the hors dÕoeuvres table was Boyne Mountain chef, Monte Wilhelm, who said he enjoyed the buffet.
Each year the chamber recognizes people in the community in four categories: civic pride, business leadership, volunteerism and ambassadorship. Chamber Executive Director, Scott MacKenzie, announced the awards.
The Civic Pride Award was given to the Sesquicentennial Committee for the year-long events celebrating Boyne CityÕs 150th birthday.
The Sally Roselli Business Leadership Award went to Kathy Anderson,owner of Boyne Country Books.
"She cares deeply about the community,Ó MacKenzie said. "She is known as a local focal point of information and when you want to know you go to Kathy AndersonÕs store.Ó
The crowd erupted into energetic and extended applause for Anderson who serves on various boards and is consistently active in the community.
The Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Barb Bryant.
"I first met her when she came into our office and asked, ÔWhat can I do?ÕÓ MacKenzie said in his introduction. Bryant was especially recognized for her work in helping to organize the annual meeting.
The Ambassador of the Year Award was given to former teacher Carole McGinty.
"Holy smoke, you find a former elementary school teacher and you get things done,Ó MacKenzie said, prompting laughter from the audience.
Rep. Kevin Elsenheimer who represents the Boyne area in Lansing attended the meeting. He presented plaques that expressed appreciation for community service to the four award recipients. The plaques were signed by state Sen. Jason Allen and Elsenheimer.
Chamber members and friends participated in silent and live auctions.
Donated items included luxury spa passes from Boyne USA Solace Spa, a framed photo of Boyne City from SweetGrass Framing & Gallery, a gift certificate from Indo-China Gardens, and a gift basket from Red Brick Salon.
MacKenzie introduced the 2007 Board of Directors.. They include Rob Swartz, President; Pam Greetis, Vice President; Kathy Anderson, Secretary; Zane Carter, Treasurer and Lynn Amato, Larry Glascow, Mike Lange and Jack Laurent
This yearÕs event sponsors were Boyne City All School Boosters, Great Lakes Energy, Korthase Flinn Insurance and Financial Services and Wolverine Dilworth Hotel and Restaurant.
The Boyne Area Chamber of Commerce 2006 accomplishments include marketing promotion locally, down state, in the Chicago area and in Indiana. Other accomplishments were the arrival in Boyne of world class events, in part because of chamber efforts, and referral by the chamber of inquires to area businesses.
Chamber staff Lorraine Manary, Pam Chipman and Deb Jason assisted in organizing this yearÕs event.
