The Citizen-Journal is committed to being the “hometown paper” of choice for
both the East Jordan and Boyne City areas, as well as the rest of Charlevoix
County, a popular destination for those visitors looking to enjoy the best
northern Michigan has to offer.
Although the paper has had several different names and more than a few owners,
the Citizen-Journal has served Boyne City and East Jordan, as well as the
surrounding communities, since 1881.
Since that time, it’s chronicled the area at its best and worst, and has also
recorded some of the changes that 120 years bring.
In 1974, the Northland County Press changed its name to the Charlevoix County
Press. Then, in 1994, Hugh and Susan Conklin purchased the Press and changed its
name to The Citizen, which historically had been the name of the newspaper for
most of its 120-year history. The Conklins purchased the East Jordan Journal in
1997 and, in 1999, both papers were sold to 21st Century Newspapers.
In 2001, the publications were formally merged, creating the Citizen-Journal, as
it’s known today, with its office located at 112 S. Park St. In beautiful Boyne
City.
The weekly newspaper, along with its sister publications The Antrim County News
(Bellaire), The Leader and The Kalkaskian (Kalkaska), The Town Meeting (Elk
Rapids) and the Star Penny-Stretcher, were most recently purchased by the
Journal Register Co., based in Yardley, PA in 2004.
The five local publications form Up North Publications, a division of Morning
Star Publications in Mt. Pleasant.
The staff of the Citizen-Journal remain committed to serving the communities of
Boyne City and East Jordan in age when the distribution of information is
becoming increasingly complex.
The Citizen-Journal is the place for complete coverage of high school sports,
in-depth coverage of local government. It’s also the place to find stories about
the triumphs, tragedies capers and shenanigans of your neighbors.
